Meguiar's G110v2 Car PolisherThe Meguiar's G110v2 is the best selling dual-action car polisher in America. It is a professional quality machine that's safe for use at home and on the job. Even if you have no experience using a car polisher, in just a few minutes you will feel comfortable with the Meguiar's G110v2.

The G110v2 is Meguiar's second generation G110 polisher. With its latest innovations, once again Meguiar's demonstrates why it is the number one name in car care. The G110v2 offers more standard features than any other car polisher in its price range.

To appreciate what the Meguiar's g110v2 Professional Polisher can do -- and won't do -- to your car's paint finish, let’s take a look at how the dual-action polisher does its job.

Dual-Action Car Polisher Defined

Dual-action polisher eccentric mechanism

The Meguiar's G110v2 car polisher use rotor mechanism that freely orbits the polishing pad around the center shaft. A counterbalance weight dampens vibrations for smooth operation.

The Meguiar's G110v2 is a dual-action car polisher. This means that the polishing pad both orbits and spins.

To accomplish this, the G110v2 polisher has a rotor device that orbits the polishing pad around its center spindle. At the same time, the polishing pad itself is free to spins on its own bearing. This is what allows the polisher to be as gentle as your hand, yet work much faster.

As you might imagine, the off-center weight of the pad and its Velcro backing plate would create a lot of vibration if not counterbalanced. That's the beauty in Meguiar's polisher engineering. They use a balanced counterweight that dampens the vibrations. The operation is surprisingly smooth, even at full speed.

The orbiting and free wheeling action the G110v2's tool head is what makes it so safe and effective as a car polisher. Where a rotary buffer, most commonly used in paint body shops and by car detailers, directly turns the buffing wheel, the G110v2 moves the pad indirectly. This indirect motion is what eliminates the build up of heat that can damage paint and create holograms (the circular patters in the paint caused by a rotary tool).

Just Like Hand Polishing... Only Much Faster!

As mentioned, the polishing action of the G110v2 is a lot like hand polishing, only it gets the job done much faster. Imagine, if you will, being able to make 6,800 super-tight hand circles in just one minute. Does the image of Superman zooming around your car come to mind? That's exactly what the G110v2 can do. It's very easy on your car's paint, like hand polishing, but it work at super-human speed!

Dual-action polisher oscillation patern

The orbiting head action, combined with a high-speed motor offers the same gentle polishing action as your hand, only at super high speed.

The tool polishing pad action of the Meguiar's polisher has been described as a “jiggling” motion, but this is not quite right. The polishing pad is allowed to free-spin on its own bearing while it orbits around motor's drive shaft. When switched on, the pad seems to rotate under power, but it's not. The rotation is created by the centrifugal force.

It's Not a Cheap "Car Waxer"... A Quality, Life-Long Tool!

If you have "$29.95 Special" car polisher that makes impressive noise, but does little or nothing for your car’s paint finish, you can understand why the G110v2 is so popular. Most orbital car polishers are simply too weak to do much of anything. The makers of these tools should be required to call them "car waxers," because that's really all they can do.

Old style car waxer

A car waxer like this one can't correct paint flaws.

What do we mean by the term car waxer? These are typically two handed machines with the motor located over the top of the waxing pad. These machines are designed to apply and buff off car wax. They most definitely are not tools for paint correction.

You will also notice that the pad size on a car waxer is larger than the Meguiar's 6" design (most often 8" or 10"). Car waxers spread wax just fine, but when it comes to polishing to removing swirl marks, water spots and scratches, they simply are not up to the task. There are many reasons for this, primarily clear coat finish on new cars is very hard and car waxers don't have enough power.

If all you need is a machine to wax your car, one of these $29.95 specials will do the job. However, if your car has swirl marks, water spot, scratches, oxidation or other surface defects, you need a Meguiar's G110v2. It's the proper tool for the job.

MEGUIAR'S G110v2 CAR POLISHER FEATURES

Side by side results from dual action polisher

This is an excellent example of what the G110v2 polisher can do for your car. As you can see here, even a badly oxidized finish is easily restored to a high gloss shine.

The original Meguiar's G100 was fitted with a 3.7 AMP electric motor. As clear coat paint finishes became harder and more durable, a more powerful tool became essential.

The new G110v2 car polisher has a 4.5 AMP motor. More power is only part of the upgrade; the new polisher also has a better speed range.

The G110v2 has a motor speed range from 1,800 to 6,800 operations per minutes (OPM). The speed is controlled using a thumb wheel at the rear end of the machine (the Meguiar's G110v2 is the only DA polisher with the speed control on the top where you can see it!).

The OPM measurement is used instead of RPMs to distinguish the difference between orbits and revolutions. At 6,800 OPM, the Meguiar's polisher is doing a lot of work.

Industry Standard Car Polisher Attachments

One of the features that made the original Meguiar's G110 so popular is it's 5/16-24 spindle. As a result of the common tool thread size, a lot of different tool attachments fit the G110v2, making it more versatile. For instance, Velcro backing plates, used to attach polishing pads, come in many different sizes and materials. Soft brushes for scrubbing carpet and upholstery are also available with a 5/16-24 fitment.

Meguiar's G110v2 Size and Weight

In pictures, the Meguiar's G110v2 car polisher appears large. The machine is much smaller and lighter than a rotary style car buffer. It measures about 10 inches in overall length and weighs about 6 pounds with a backing plate and pad attached. Unlike a rotary buffer, which is 13-15" long and can weigh in at almost twice the weight, the Meguiar's G110v2 is easy for anyone to use.

Meguiar's G110v2 Handle

Meguiar's uses a "D" handle design that places the weight of your hand perfectly over the center of balance of the polisher. This keeps the polisher stable for smooth operation. The handle also serves as a stand. When switched off, you can turn the machine upside down on its handle. This keeps the polishing pad off the ground where it could possibly become contaminated.

Meguiar's G110v2 Velcro Backing Plate and Foam Polishing Pads

Meguiar's W68DA Velcro Backing plate

Meguiar's W68DA Velcro Backing Plate.

The Meguiar's G110v2 comes equipped with the best DA backing plate in the industry, the W68DA. Molded of solid urethane, the W68DA is virtually indestructible yet flexible enough to contour over curved surfaces.

The new backing plate is designed to work perfectly with both old and new Meguiar's foam pads. If you have the original Meguiar's G100, G110, or the Porter Cable 7424 polisher, this backing plate is an excellent upgrade.

You can also use a smaller backing plate with the Meguiar's G110v2 for fitment of 4" foam spot pads. Spot pads are the ideal solution for localized paint correction or buffing in tight spots.

In 2009, Meguiar's introduced a new foam pad design called Softbuff 2.0. The new pads are an inch larger in diameter than to original Softbuff pads, and the backside is recessed.

Meguiar's Softbuff 2.0 Pad Design

Meguiar's new Softbuff 2.0 Pads featured a recessed back for more efficient polishing and better protection.

The recess area does two things. First, it protects your car the the backing plate edge. This way, if you get too close to trim, the edge of the backing plate can't touch it and cause damage. Second, the recessed area is thinner, and the thinner foam is better able to transmit the DA polisher's energy to the paint and polish.

The foam on the Softbuff 2.0 Cutting Pad and Polishing Pad remain the same as the original. The Softbuff 2.0 Finishing Pad foam is new. It's for applying finishing polishes, glazes and liquid waxes.

The G110v2 Competitors

There are several polishers in the same class as the Meguiar's G110v2. These include the Porter Cable 7424XP and the Griot's Garage Random Orbit Polisher.

Operation of all three polisher is nearly identical. Meguiar's offers the most standard features.[atag]B002654I46[/atag][atag]B002KRFQBY[/atag]

If you look at the numbers, the Griot's Garage car polisher should blow away Meguiar's, but numbers are deceiving. We find no evidence that the Griot's Garage polisher has a 7 AMP (850 watt) motor). We're not sure how they measured it, because our meter rated it at 4.9 AMPs (full load). In actual use, all three units are very similar in the amount of power they provide.
